Written on 4-19-01, Jelene just kind of waltzed out of the crowd in my head and demanded (quite stubbornly) to be written. I complied.

The Rose Has Thorns

Baron Cinec closed the door lightly, leaving only the two of them together. The candles flickered softly, giving the room a dim, alluring appeal. She smiled at him from where she reclined nude on the massive bed, one arm supporting her head. Long, dark hair flowing about her with a delicate rose tucked into a headband framed her face quite attractively. But it was her young, no doubt smooth, body that impassioned him. He quickly began to strip the fine clothes from his own rotund body as he made his way closer to her. Hunger glowed in his eyes and she laughed as he practically tore off his undergarments in his haste to get to her.

As he reached the bed, she leaned over and kissed him; a lustful kiss that held the promise of a full night. He grabbed her about the waist and forced her to him, their bodies touching skin to skin. He took her lips hungrily in return, yet more crazed with desire.

Suddenly he stopped. He looked at her with wide disbelieving eyes and slowly sank onto the bed. He let out a ragged gasp and his body went limp. Most of him, at least; a sign she had sufficiently distracted him.

Jelene sighed and extracted her arm from under the quite overweight baron. It took some doing, for Cinec was of no aid, but the task was nevertheless accomplished. With a bit of effort, she dislodged her dagger from beneath his rib cage and wiped it clean on the white silken sheets. Those sheets about Cinec were already a bright ruby red.

She rose from the bed and walked to the basin against the wall. She removed the "headband" she always wore, replaced the dagger in the attached sheath, and set it and the rose next to the basin. Quite an ingenious contraption, that headband. She had to admit that using her own thick ringlets to conceal her weapon was a stroke of genius. No man ever noticed her retrieval of the dagger nor even knew she had anything until it was too late. Something about a nude woman seemed put them at ease.

Jelene scooped a bit of water in her hands and sucked it into her mouth, swishing it vigorously before spitting it onto the floor. What was this man's fascination with putting his tongue where it had no place being? She shook herself slightly in disgust. If the price had not been so high for this one...

She washed off the small amount of blood that had dripped onto her hand. She chastised herself for letting such a thing happen. She was usually more careful than that. Where was her mind tonight?

She sighed and redressed, taking her time. She was expected to be entertaining the baron and to leave so soon may be suspicious.

After sufficient time had passed, she gingerly donned her headband and took up the rose. Before leaving, she walked over to the bed where Cinec lay, eyes still wide in surprise, though he was now completely limp. She carefully placed the rose in his hand, then leaned down to kiss him lightly on the forehead.

"Careful," the assassin chided softly with a cynical smile. "The rose has thorns."
